Coal Mine De-Gassing Equipment

In coal mining there are several risks associated with the presence of methane (and other gases) in a coal seam. The major risks include:

  • Outburst Event – A sudden and violent release of gas and rock material from a working face or the interior of a borehole, 1.
  • Gas Ignition – Ignition of a flammable mixture of mine gases.

Mine De-gassing is one of a variety of stress relieving methods that can be used to reduce the risk from outburst events, with its ultimate aim being the improvement in safety in underground mining operations.

There are several methods employed in effective gas drainage with the three most common being:

  • Surface to In-Seam, SIS
  • Underground to In-Seam, UIS
  • Ventilation Air Methane, VAM.

Depending on the physical characteristics of the target coal seam and adsorped methane content, effective mine degassing will use a combination of more than one of the methods listed above.  

Methane extracted through the methods above is either utilised in power generation or destroyed through flaring.
